In an attempt to improve oral health of naval personnel as well as the
public living in rural areas, a mobile dental surgical unit introduced by the Navy,
commenced its operations with effect from today (25th June 2020).
Going by the able guidance of Commander of the Navy, this project first
mooted by the Navy’s Dental Department. Accordingly, with the assistance of
Automobile Engineering and Electrical Engineering Departments, Surgeon
Commodore (Dental) Nandani Wijedoru and Surgeon Captain (Dental) Hemantha
Karandeniya took much interest to see the successful execution of this project.
In circumstances where there is
an increasing tendency in oral health problems among most of the people in
society, the realization of this innovative concept will help serve the public
in rural areas as well as naval personnel on duty in areas where dental
facilities are hard to come by.
This
mobile dental surgical unit has been designed using advanced medical equipment
and it is interesting to
note that a refurbished bus has been utilized to set up this unit. With the
help of a staff including two dental surgeons, the Navy is expected to wheel
off this mobile dental surgical unit with advanced dental technology, to address oral
health problems of naval personnel and community in underprivileged areas
across the island.
Further, this mobile dental surgical unit is also made available to be deployed
in any emergency situation in the country.
